Be Aware of Fake Jobs

A simple way to find out whether a job offer is fake or not is check for the mail ID. It should be @companyname. Sometimes they can even forge that. If they have asked to transfer any money its 100% fakejob. If you are still in confusion google the subject line :) here is an example fake offer letter

Off Campus Job Opportunities for Freshers

Hello

Here i will be giving a brief detail of various off campus job opportunities available to freshers. I will not be posting jobs but will tell you where to look for jobs. Usually freshers go for the following options. I will be discussing each one of them.

1. Applying at company's career portal
I know many who have applied through company career portal. I had applied too. As far as I know it helped none. No one got a interview call when they applied on the companies career portal. That makes sense. There are thousands of fresher engineers and when a company has a vacancy, it will atleast get 10k applications. It will be difficult to go through each and every resume. If u have applied on company’s portal through a referral you have chances of getting calls for an interview or atleast a reply that your profile doesn’t match the job profile.  If u have experience only then the company career portal is good way to apply for a job.

2. Job sites
There are various job sites which post off-campus openings for freshers.  Most of them are genuine. You will have a tough competition when you go for such off campus job openings. Usually there will be atleast 7000 job applications for mere 20-30 vacancies. I have come across one of the core company which had 8000+ fresh graduates for first round and finally they recruited only 9 of them!! But you have chances of getting through. Some of the useful jobsites are

          http://www.chetanasforum.com/
          www.freshersworld.com
          http://campusselect.in/
          http://www.naukri.com/

There are many more. But I found these more useful.

3. Employability tests
Personally I prefer this for applying for off campus jobs. If u think you are good at aptitude tests, this is the best way to find a job off campus. The main advantage is the initial filtering is done so there is less competition. Instead of 10000 graduates competing for 20-30 vacancies,  for example you will have 100 competing for 10 vacancies. Again there are many employability tests like elimus, AMCAT, JobMentor etc. There are advantages and disadvantages in each of them. If u think you are better than many in aptitude tests and as I mentioned in my previous post, if u want a great package, go for elitmus. They provide really good companies with packages ranging between 3lakhs to 10+ lakhs per annum. I am not trying to advertising elitmus , I will gain nothing from that . I have got many interview calls from them after I gave my employability test. I got atleast 5 calls in 2 months. I got selected in 2 of them. And job profiles and packages were better than campus offers. The elitmus test called PH test is of course difficult, It is of CAT standards. If they have to choose good candidates it has to be tough. The test fee is around 750 and I think the services offered by them are worth it. The AMCAT is considered to be easier than elitmus and I don’t have clear details of it as I have not taken it.

4. Consultancies
After trying many methods, fresh engineers often end up with this. There are good consultancies as well as fraud consultancies. Most of them are not genuine consultancies. But there are some genuine consultancies. As far as I know, the ones which don’t charge you money are genuine. Yes, they will be paid by the company for each suitable candidate they provide. Presently I don’t have the list of genuine consultancies. I will post them as soon as I get them.

Feel free to express your opinion, suggestions, questions etc..

Towards the Light

 Hello,

This post is mainly targeted to final year BE students. It is the most important time in our life as we have to decide our future. General options in front of us are pursuing higher studies in India or abroad or get into a job. I would like to discuss about the latter topic.

Most of the colleges offer campus placements. If u r lucky enough to be in one of the prestigious colleges which has good placements then you need not worry. But if u have talent and you were unable to get into one of the best institution(in terms of campus placements) then you need to work a bit to get the job that match your talent.

Being in final year most of us will not be aware of what exactly we will be working on after completion of graduation. IT is very necessary for every fresher to have complete knowledge of the corporate world. Lets suppose you have got a job offer from one of the topmost IT company through your campus placement. Let me call this company as "abc". Before if you decide to stick to the job, you have to do a bit research on what the company is all about.

First you should know what type of company “abc” is. It can be either a service company or a product company. Both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. A service company might provide you good training but there might be long periods of “on bench period” especially during recession. Currently most of the service companies have lots of fresher engineers on bench. On bench period is a strategy used by service sector companies to manage time intervals between projects. In this period you will not be given any productive work but you will be paid. The darker side is your experience doesn’t count. If you are lucky you might get very good projects in service companies. Sometimes the work pressure will be too much. There might be no scope for innovative ideas. If you are into a product company, best part is you will have no bench concept usually. You will be put into work the day you finish your training. You will also gain domain knowledge. Suppose if a product based company “xyz” is a company providing solutions for travel sector, you will learn a lot of things in that domain. There is an opportunity to develop innovative ideas. There will be less work pressure. The disadvantage is its better if u work in the same company than to switch companies. You can change if you find one which works in similar field. Now it is for you to decide which one will suit you better. Usually the mass recruiting companies which visit campuses are service based companies.

Now what if you are from Electronics branch or any other non-IT branch but have got into IT Company. It depends on your passion. But most of them find it difficult to get a job in core companies as the number of vacancies in core engineering fields is far less than IT fields. What I personally believe is its good if u get a core engineering job but if not it is better to like the job which you have got. Electronics engineers can easily adjust to the software environment whereas mechanical engineers find it a bit difficult in the beginning. However most of the core companies pay you far less than IT companies unless you are from premier institutions like IITs, NITs etc. Job satisfaction is important than salary. So if u have a option between core company and an IT company with an attractive package I believe it is better to go for core company unless you have a great passion for software programming.

Coming to the salary package. You think you deserve a better job or better package? And you are not in one of the premier institutions? Can you get a company with a good salary package??
The answer is Yes! I will be explaining it in my next post. Watch out :)
